Well, the iPad 2 is a better device than the iPad in that it has features that the other lacks, such as the dual cameras. Whether those features are worth the extra cost depends on how useful they would be to you personally. If you wouldn’t ever use the cameras, then they’re simply increasing the cost without increasing the device’s utility to you.

That said, I wouldn’t have purchased either an iPad or an iPad 2. They’re simply overpriced for the features they possess, especially when you compare them to competing Android and Blackberry tablets, which have more features at lower prices. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, for example, is very similar to the iPad 2 in terms of size, weight, price, and appearance (though the Galaxy Tab is thinner and lighter), but the Galaxy Tab has more memory, a larger screen with a higher resolution, much better cameras (both front and rear), and stereo speakers. On the hardware specs alone, the Galaxy Tab is the better value. It can also play Flash videos and web content, and is more flexible in terms of customization and configuration than the iPad 2. Yes, there are currently more apps in the iTunes App Store than in the Android Market, but the Android market is catching up fairly quickly. So over all, the iPad 2 doesn’t look all that shiny to me.

When you consider other tablets that have lower price points but even more features, such as the Asus Eee Transformer (with all of the features of the Galaxy Tab plus a micro-SD card slot, mini-HDMI port, and keyboard dock that adds 2 USB ports, an SD card reader, and increased battery capacity) and the Toshiba Thrive (which has the features of the Galaxy Tab plus number of different ports including full-size HDMI and USB, as well as a user-replaceable, if admittedly lower-capacity, battery), I personally have to wonder why anyone would consider the iPad 2 to be a real contender in the current crop of tablets if it weren’t for the user based established for it by the original iPad.

But, that said, it really comes down to my first point: what’s best for you. The iPad’s iOS is simpler and less flexible than Android, which some people consider to be an advantage rather than a disadvantage, because the increased flexibility and customizability is for them like the iPad 2′s cameras for someone who would never use them. If you’re happy with the iPad, then it was a good investment for you, no matter what anyone else thinks.
